While we wait for permission for destructive sampling of the specimen, we have busied ourselves with what we can do with our callipers and balance. Last night I recorded the diameter as being an average of 27.8 millimetres and the mass as being 14.2 grams. I am wary of the risk of corrosion so we have not measured the volume.
The wait to hear back from the Department has been excruciating and such was my restlessness that today I asked Aisha to make the same measurements again. She indulged my need to be *busy* with something and did so.
Her measurements were different. The coin was now 28.8 millimetres and 14.7 grams. I almost shoved Aisha out of her chair and measured the thing again myself. I recalibrated the balance and had Aisha walk outside the encampment to witness that there were no planes flying overhead or lorries going past, nothing creating any unusual vibration that might disturb the balance. Even so, the callipers stubbornly reported the same, increased, diameter.
The coin has changed size. It has increased in mass, somehow. Overnight.
